Souris's First Night Home

It started out as a friendly visit to look at a dog and gauge my interest in canine companionship turned and ended with me and Souris with a sleepless night on the floor in my bedroom.

As soon as I looked into the excercise pen and saw the two puppies playing, it was a futile battle. One sat sleeping, like a stuffed teddy bear while the other hopped around with playful puppy energy. The active one ran up to me and I picked him up. His white coat was beautiful, indicative of strong health. Although the two brothers were similar in length, his head was slightly larger than the quiet one, leading me to believe he'd grow to be strong and assertive. I put the playful one down and picked up his brother. His docile nature let him sink into my arms and he would actually look at me with the "please love me" eyes. Corny, Yes, but absolutely true. That is how my love and I met.

After an hour of logistics, I picked up Male 2 (as he was named at the time) and headed down to the closest PetSmart. Let the pampering begin! The minute we entered the car, however, the squeaking, crying and whining began. Who could blame him? He just go ripped from his mother and brother and was being kidnapped by a complete stranger. I couldn't feel like a lower human being until I walked up to the Grooming counter at PetSmart to request a nail trimming (his nails hadn't been trimmed since birth) and the lady at the counter requested the dog name. I didn't have one. He has no mother, no brother and now no name? "Puppy", is what the counter-lady wrote down.

We patiently waited our turn for the grooming and in his sadness, "Puppy" begins to whimper and cry again, except his cries sound like squeaks. No stranger to squeaks, I was immediately reminded of my roommate days in Paris. Mon petit souris (my little mouse)...and now I have a new one =) That is how Souris was named.
